A Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) is an Automatic Control Valve designed to reduce a higher unregulated inlet pressure to a constant, reduced downstream (outlet) pressure regardless of variations in demand and/or upstream (inlet) water pressure.
Pilot Operated Pressure Reducing Valves

The throttled position of the main valve is controlled by an adjustable pilot valve operating in conjunction with an orifice (or needle valve). The pilot valve senses the downstream (outlet) pressure and reacts immediately as the outlet pressure increases or decreases with varying demand.

The pilot senses the downstream (outlet) pressure and reacts immediately to add or remove water from the top of the main valve diaphragm assembly, allowing the valve to reposition and throttle as the outlet pressure tends to increase or decrease with varying flow demand. The pilot diaphragm will automatically sense the changes in the flow of the system as it continuously controls the main valve to throttle or to open or close and maintain the desired, preset reduced outlet pressure. The throttling action of the main valve provides the required reduced downstream pressure.

Pressure reducer control valve controls downstream pressure value continuously and maintains it constant without being affected from flow rate and upstream pressure values. When no flow exists in the system, it is closer by itself automatically. When valve upstream pressure value decreases below adjusted downstream pressure value, it is opened fully by itself.

Spring-Loaded Pressure-Reducing Valves

The spring-loaded pressure-reducing valve is commonly used in pneumatic systems. It is often referred to as a pressure regulator. The valve simply uses spring pressure against a diaphragm to open the valve. On the bottom of the diaphragm, the outlet pressure of the valve forces the diaphragm upward to shut the valve. When the outlet pressure drops below the set point of the valve, the spring pressure overcomes the outlet pressure and forces the valve stem downward, opening the valve. As the outlet pressure increases, approaching the desired pressure, the pressure under the diaphragm begins to overcome spring pressure, forcing the valve stem upward and closing the valve. You can adjust the downstream pressure by turning the adjusting screw, which varies the spring pressure against the diaphragm. This particular spring-loaded valve will fail in the open position if a diaphragm rupture occurs.

How Does 4Matic  Direct Acting Water Pressure Reducing Valve Work?

Installed in series directly after the water meter in homes, commercial buildings, and manufacturing plants, a water pressure reducing valve automatically reduces the pressure from the water supply main to a lower, more sensible pressure.

 


Water entering the valve from municipal mains is constricted within the valve body and directed through the inner chamber controlled by an adjustable spring loaded diaphragm and disc. Even if the supply water pressure fluctuates, the pressure reducing valve ensures a constant flow of water at a functional pressure, as long as the supply pressure does not drop below the valve's pre-set pressure.

Personal Responsibilities: 
flow control products, safety glasses, approved safety shoes and hard hat must be worn.   2.Personnel should never hammer on any component when pressure is present. Hammering on any part or component may also cause foreign material or steel slags to become airborne.   3.It is a personal responsibility to use the proper tools when servicing the valve.  It is a personal responsibility to be knowledgeable and trained in the use and handling of tools for all maintenance of the valve.   4.Hot surface may be present; it is a person’s own responsibility to protect against burn injury.

On Location:   1.Each valve is clearly marked with a maximum pressure rating.  This pressure must not be exceeded or SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH CAN OCCUR!2.The valve discharge connections should be properly cleaned and lightly oiled before the downstream piping is attached.  Any worn, damaged or missing seals should be replaced.   3.Welding, brazing or heating any part of the valve is prohibited.  If accessories must be attached, consult Weir Oil & Gasfactory prior to installation.  4.A complete visual inspection of the valve must be made prior to each use.  Any leaking seals, broken bolts, leaking hoses or improperly tightened parts must be remedied prior to using.   5.Any repairs or service (even routine maintenance) performed on the valve must be performed by a trained service technician who is qualified to work on high pressure flow control valves.  All such service and repairs must be supervised by qualified management personnel or returned to Weir Oil & Gas for service

The pilot assembly reacts to changes in downstream pressure allowing the main valve to modulate between the closed and open position ensuring a constant downstream set pressure. Once the downstream pressure reaches the pilot setting, the main valve will seal shut preventing damage downstream. Two-Stage Serial Reduction Configuration

 

The two-stage serial reduction approach uses two 4Matic valves in series to reduce or eliminate extreme variations between the water main's inflow pressure and the desired, final reduced pressure. Two stage reduction is recommended when initial pressures are 200psi or greater, or when the desired pressure reduction ratio is greater than 4:1, e.g., from 200psi to 50psi, or where the inflow pressure fluctuates greatly. The advantage of two-stage serial reduction is that neither valve is subjected to extreme pressure differentials, thus prolonging valve life and delivering more precise pressure regulation.

  • Pressure Modulation Valve is a pressure reducing valve with a special (Patented) pilot that increases downstream pressure as flow increases.
  • The PFC valve alters and controls pressure with flow to create virtually constant pressure at the critical pressure point in a system. It will also automatically adjust for distribution friction losses. The PFC valve will deliver consistent performance as it has no electrical components and is not affected should the valve chamber be flooded. The valve may be used wherever a standard PRV is installed.

  • Pressure Management Valve is a simple package to save water loss and money. It meets system needs by providing higher pressure when called for 24/7 and reduced pressure to save water leakage (and money) at all other times.
  • An orifice with a low pressure drop 1.0 psi, (0.07 Bar) is installed upstream of a standard pressure reducing valve fitted with an extra pressure reducing pilot and a sensitive differential pilot which switches between 2 pressure reducing pilots to suit the system flow demand. High flow demand or fire flow will cause the differential pilot to automatically switch control from the low pressure to the higher pressure pilot. The action is then reversed when flow demand falls below the differential pilot set point valve position by modulating the pressure above the diaphragm. The downstream pressure is maintained relatively steady at the pilot set-point.

  • The by-pass valve is set 5 psi / 0.35 bar higher than the main valve. Under low flow conditions, the main PR valve closes and the by-pass stays open, controlling the pressure at very low flows without seat chatter.
  • The pilot valves sense the downstream pressure through a connection at the valve outlet. Under flowing conditions, the pilot reacts to small changes in pressure to control the valve position by modulating the pressure above the diaphragm. The downstream pressure is maintained virtually steady at the pilot set-point.
  • In contrast to pressure relief valves, which affect the level of input pressure (i.e. pump pressure) fed into the hydraulic system, pressure reducing valves are used to influence the output pressure of the hydraulic system to a subsystem (e.g. actuator pressure).
  • Reducing the input pressure (primary pressure) or maintaining a particular output pressure (secondary pressure) is achieved at a set value which is below the varying pressure occurring in the main hydraulic circuit. It is thus possible to reduce the pressure in one part of the circuit to a lower level than the system pressure.

This type of valve (which is normally open) is used to maintain reduced pressures in specified locations of hydraulic systems. The high incoming pressure is reduced to a constant pressure level to protect the important instrument.
  • The principal parts of the reducing valve are the main valve; an upward-seating valve that has a piston on top of its valve stem, an upward-seating auxiliary (or controlling) valve, a controlling diaphragm, and an adjusting spring and screw.
  • A pressure-reducing valve uses a spring-loaded spool to control the downstream pressure. If the downstream pressure is below the valve setting, the fluid flows freely from the inlet to the outlet.
  • Reducing valve operation is controlled by high pressure at the valve inlet and the adjusting screw on top of the valve assembly. The pressure entering the main valve assists the main valve spring in keeping the reducing valve closed by pushing upward on the main valve disk/0
  • The controlling diaphragm transmits a downward force that tends to open the auxiliary valve. The downward force is exerted by the adjusting spring, which is controlled by the adjusting screw. Reduced pressure from the main valve outlet is bled back to a chamber beneath the diaphragm to counteract the downward force of the adjusting spring.
