As a result, they are more popular as a shut-off valve then for example the gate valve. Moreover, they are more resistant against contaminated media than most other types of valves. In special versions, ball valves are also used as a control valve. This application is less common due to the relatively limited accuracy of controlling the flow rate in comparison with other types of control valves. However, the ball valve also offers some advantages here. For example, the valve still ensures a reliable sealing, even in the case of dirty media.Circuit function
  • The valve may have two, three or even four ports (2-way, 3-way or 4-way). The vast majority of ball valves are 2-way and manually operated with a lever. The lever is in line with pipe when the valve is opened. In closed position, the handle is perpendicular to the pipe. Manually operated ball valves can be quickly closed and therefore there is a risk of water hammer with fast-flowing media. Some ball valves are fitted with a transmission. The 3-way valves have an L-shaped or T-shaped bore. As a result, various circuit functions can be achieved such as distributing or mixing flows. Housing materials
  • The most common housing materials for ball valves are brass, stainless steel and PVC. The ball is usually made of chrome plated steel, chrome plated brass, stainless steel or PVC. The seats are often made of Teflon, but could also be made of other synthetic materials or metals. More information on this topic you can find on the page: Chemical resistance of materials.
Stainless Steel
  • Stainless steel ball valves are used for corrosive media and aggressive environments. They are therefore often used in seawater, swimming pools, osmosis installations, with high temperatures, and many chemicals. Most stainless steel is austenitic. Type 304 and 316 are the most common, 316 has the best corrosion resistance. 304 is sometimes referred to as 18/8 because of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 316 has 18% chromium and 10% nickel (18/10). Stainless steel valves usually require a higher operating torque  than for example brass or PVC valves. This must be taken into account when a stainless steel valve is operated by an electric or pneumatic actuator.
PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride)
  • PVC ball valves often have a lower price (except for ISO-top valves) and are widely used in irrigation, water supply and drainage or corrosive media. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. PVC is resistant to the most of the salt solutions, acids, bases, and organic solvents. PVC not suitable for temperatures higher than 60 °C, and is also not resistant to aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. PVC is not as strong as brass or stainless steel, therefore PVC ball valves have lower pressure rating.
Seals and O-rings
  • Most valve seats are made of PTFE (Teflon). PTFE stands for PolyTetraFluorEthylene. This material has a very good chemical resistance and a high melting point (~327°C). Besides that, the friction coefficient is extremely low. A small disadvantage of PTFE is that the material shows creep, which can cause a deterioration of the sealing over time. Besides that, PTFE has a rather high thermal expansion coefficient. A solution for this problem is to use a spring in order to apply a constant pressure on the Teflon seal, like for example a cup spring. Other popular sealing materials are enforced PTFE and Polyamide (Nylon). The harder the material of the valve seat is, the more difficult it is to maintain proper sealing. For some application in which soft materials are not possible to use, for example with very high temperatures, metal or ceramic valve seats are used.

Ball design

The most common design is the "floating ball design". The ball is suspended in the media and held in place by two sealing rings. Some high-quality valves have a "trunnion ball design". The ball is supported at the top and bottom to reduce the load on the valve seats.

The hole through the ball may have different profiles such as a full bore, reduced bore or V-shaped.

The ball valve, along with butterfly and plug valves, is part of the quarter-turn valve family. Ball valves are known for reliable, bubble-tight sealing. Thus, they are a great choice for gas applications where tight shutoff is necessary. Due to the potential of constant wearing on the seats, ball valves are not ideal for throttling applications. The body of a ball valve usually is made of steel and can be made more durable with nickel plating.
The most common ball valves are considered to be two-way, which allows flow to travel linearly from the inlet to the exit. Furthermore, the three-way and four-way ball valves allow for flow to travel in multiple directions, including 90-degree angles.
There are four general body styles of ball valves: fully welded, three-piece body (also called side or end-entry), split-body, and top-entry. The difference is based on how the pieces of the valve are manufactured and assembled, but the valve operation is the same in each type. Each design has its benefits.

The trunnion mounted stem absorbs the thrust from the line pressure, preventing excess friction between the ball and seats, so even at full rated working pressure operating torque remains low.
Floating Ball Valve– A floating ball valve is not held in place by a trunnion, and instead is attached only to the stem. This sometimes causes the ball to float slightly downstream. However, when this happens, the ball presses against the seat, creating a positive seal.
Rising Stem Ball Valve– A rising stem ball valve incorporates tilt-and-turn operation, eliminating seal rubbing which is one of the primary causes of valve failure. When the valve is closed, the core is wedged against the seat, ensuring positive shutoff. When the valve is open, the core tilts away from the seal and the flow passes uniformly around the core face.     Additionally, the valve is able to eliminate localized high- velocity flow that typically creates uneven seat wear exhibited by ordinary ball, gate, and plug valves.

Additionally, there are three basic types of bores for ball valves: full port, reduced port (also known as standard port), and v-port. These four types have different constructions and purposes.

Full-Port Ball Valve – A full-port, also known as a full-bore, ball valve has a bore internal diameter (ID) approximately equal to the pipeline ID. This allows for reduced friction and pressure loss across the valve. With a full-port ball valve there is no restriction to the flow of fluid, but the valve can be more expensive. This type of bore is ideal for situations where pigging may be necessary. The 4matic series split-body, full-port, flanged ball valve combines its sealing technology and design expertise with the versatility to solve even the most demanding applications. This technology is widely used in the chemical, petrochemical, and refining industries.


Reduced-Port Ball Valve – A reduced-port, also known as a reduced-bore, ball valve is a valve in which the bore is reduced to one or two nominal sizes lower. This provides a more restricted flow path, generally resulting in higher energy losses. ball valves offer both full- port and reduced-port valves.   • The assembly of the valve housing can be divided in three commonly used designs: one-piece, two-piece and three-piece housings. The difference is how the valve is assembled and this affects the possibilities for maintenance or repair. The operation of thevalves is the same in each embodiment.
  • One-piece - This is the cheapest variant. The two parts which enclose the ball are pressed or welded. The valves can not be opened for cleaning or maintenance. This type is generally used for low-demanding applications.

  • 4Matic is a manufacturer, exporter, and supplier of V Notch Ball Valve. V-Notch Ball valves are specially used to control the flow rate in pipelines because it has V-Notch inside the valve body. V Notch Ball Valve characterized V ball which is perfectly suited to give a full range of control applications with superior flow control. In small sizes, these control ball valves when compared to globe valves are more compact, lighter in weight, and much less expensive.
  • The V-Notch Ball Valve is also known as V Port Ball Valve and it can sustain up to 10Kg/Cm² pressure & temperature up to 180°C. We use PTFE seals, WCB/CF8/CF8M/CF3M materials used to make the Body, and CF8/CF8M/CF3M to make the Ball. Stainless Steel 304 has been used for the Gland plate, Gland L.N. Bolt, Trunnion pin, and bracket fitting bolts. For the Shaft and retainer, we use S.S. 304/S.S. 316. It has a class VI leakage type. It is available in 1” to 4” inches & has flanged ends 150# to 300#.
  • The 90 and 60 balls, like standard round hole balls, offer an equal percentage inherent flow characteristic. Medium angle V-Port 30 balls furnish a modified equal percentage inherent flow

V-Notch Valve
1.1 Introduction to Valves A) The V-notch valve has been designed for the requirements and applications of piping. As flow rate is effectively controlled, it has less cavitation, noise, corrosion, or vibration relatively. B) The most important feature of the V-notch valve is its body that has been prepared in appropriate sizes to meet the requirements of piping. It consists of a V-ball that controls fluid, a body that includes a seat, and an actuator to adjust the valve trim. C) The V-notch valve is designed for easy maintenance.
D) The V-notch valve trim boasts a long life span and has few faults. To use the valve to its full life span, you should install it correctly according to the manual and maintain it according to the prescribed procedures while using it.
1.2 Valve Structure A) There are largely two types of V-notch valve: soft seat and metal seat
1.3 Features of Valve A) As the V-notch valve has a V shape ball structure, it can be used for both control and on/off functions.
2. Storage A) Do not throw, drop, trip or drag V-notch valves when transporting it. B) Keep all parts of the V-notch valve in a well-ventilated place protected from fire, rain and wind. Store the valve at a temperature between - 29°C (-20°F) and 48°C (120°F). The storage area must be protected from flooding. C) Operate the elastomer (O-ring type) of pneumatic actuator at least once every six months to prevent their functional degeneration. Operate it to the full stroke even under general operation conditions at least three times a month.
D) Do not remove the flange cap attached to the flange surface to prevent foreign substances from penetrating into the system until valves are installed on the line. 3. Installation Like any other valves, the V-notch valve must be installed carefully at first according to the following cautions to use it for many years without malfunction. A) Remove the flange cap and check whether there are any foreign substances in the body. If you find foreign substances, remove them before starting installation. B) As cast steel products are processed with rust preventive oil before shipping to prevent corrosion, remove the rust preventive oil from the pipes before installing them on the line. C) Blow off all foreign substances including welding chips in the pipes before starting installation.
E) When assembling the flange-type valve, you should use a specified gasket, and install it in parallel with the other flange. Also, you are recommended to fasten the bolts in several parts in a balanced manner sequentially in diagonal direction.
) Install the valve at right angle to the ground as much as possible. If this is impossible, attach a support to the valve before installing it. (See Fig 3.2 and 3.3) CAUTIONS Avoid horizontal piping if possible because it may adversely affect the function and performance of valves during operation. When moving V-notch valves, you should handle them carefully so that the components and air piping will not be damaged. Otherwise, the electronic and electric parts such as solenoid valve, positioner, and limit switch may get damaged or the valve track may change. Be careful not to damage the surface of valve flange sealing. Apply thermal insulation as needed, but do not apply thermal insulation to the cooling fin and extensions.
