Butterfly Valves

4Matic butterfly valve is from a family of valves called quarter-turn valves. The butterfly is a metal disc mounted on a rod. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned so that it completely blocks off the passageway. When the valve is fully open, the disc is rotated a quarter turn so that it allows an almost unrestricted passage of the process fluid. The valve may also be opened incrementally to regulate flow.

  • Seal Capsule
  • (Secondary Seal) This seal capsule fully isolates the valve body and stem from the line media. The Seal Capsule is made of a virgin PTFE enclosing the internal energizer. The capsule fits into grooves in the upper and lower disc hubs. When compressed between the disc and seat during assembly, the capsule becomes energized, exerting both upward and downward pressure on disc and seat surfaces.

A Butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotational motion valve, that is used to stop, regulate, and start flow.

Butterfly valves are easy and fast to open. A 90° rotation of the handle provides a complete closure or opening of the valve. Large Butterfly valves are usually equipped with a so-called gearbox, where the handwheel by gears is connected to the stem. This simplifies the operation of the valve, but at the expense of speed.

  • Butterfly valves intended for low pressure gas lines and air lines. The lightweight construction with the narrow wafer body enables easy fitment of these valves in ducts, manifolds and exhaust lines without additional support or strengthening of pipe lines.
  • These valves are primarily intended for low – pressure large volume gas / air flow control applications. The absence of seat substantially reduces the valve operating torque requirements and makes the valve very effective for flow control / regulation duties. This is an ideal choice for furnace air flow and combustion control applications.
  • Even though the body is designed for a maximum pressure of 2.5 bar the maximum shut off pressure is limited to 0.5 bar only .The disc flap is held in position by a stub shaft with an axial locking arrangement provided on the top shaft. The top shaft sealing is through stuffing box type gland sealing arrangement, which is field adjustable.
  • Damper valves can be made from different types of steel — most commonly carbonized, galvanized, or stainless. They can also be constructed from plastic and/or aluminum. There is also a wide variety of shapes and sizes of damper valves available to suit different applications across a broad range of industries. From the model that keeps smoggy outside air from entering the cabin of a passenger car to the heavy duty industrial version used to prevent chemical plant explosions, damper valves serve the vital purpose of keeping air systems clean, safe, and functioning properly. Two types of damper valves commonly used in the oil, gas, and chemical industries are blade style dampers and butterfly style dampers.
Blade Dampers
  • Blade dampers, or louvered dampers, rely on slats or “blades” to dictate the direction of air or gas travel. The slats are stacked horizontally and can be adjusted to restrict airflow to a certain area. This way, air can be directed out of a facility while simultaneously preventing outside air from entering. There are many industrial applications for blade dampers and they are commonly used in manufacturing a wide variety of materials including steel, cement, chemicals, iron, pharmaceuticals, and food products.
Butterfly Dampers
  • Butterfly dampers are usually lighter and cheaper than blade style dampers and have only one slat (sometimes called a “wafer””) as opposed to the multi-slat configuration of the louvered style valve. They control the flow of air or gas using a pipe system. A circular metal piece rotates on a vertical axis, opening and closing to start or stop the flow. This kind of valve is often used in safety applications such as fire prevention and environmental compliance systems. Such butterfly dampers can be outfitted with sensors that will automatically close and stop incoming air flow if smoke or poisonous gas is detected. Fire prevention damper valves detect rising heat levels and subsequently close off to minimize the spreading of fire and smoke.

Installation instructions from a supplier of Butterfly valves:

The valve is designed for using between all types of Flat or Raised Face flanges.
DO NOT USE FLANGE GASKETS. The Butterfly valve design liminates the need for gaskets. For proper installation, the space between flanges must be sufficient to permit valve insertion without disturbing the flange seal. Note that the diac sealing edge is in line with the flat of the shaft. Rotate the stem to position the disc within the body, place the valve between flanges and hand-tighten the bolts.
SLOWLY OPEN the valve counterclockwise to check for adequate disc clearance.
RETURN THE DISC TO 10% OPEN POSITION & cross tighten all bolts, again check for adequate disc clearance.

 The majority of all problems with Butterfly valves in the field are directly related to poor installation procedures. For this reason, it is wise to consider best-practice when laying out pipe-work and installing the valve itself.

The seat in a resilient-seated Butterfly valve usually extends around to both faces of the valve. As a result, no gaskets are required as these seats serve the function of a gasket. The seat material which extends past the face is compressed during installation and flows toward the centre of the valve seat. Any change in this configuration due to improper installation directly affects the pressure rating and seating/unseating torques.

Unlike most valve types, the Butterfly valve's disc actually extends beyond the face of the valve body at given angles of opening (say, 30° or more) when installed between flanges. Therefore, it is very important before installation to ensure that the disc is able to freely turn and enter the flanges and pipe-work.

Store indoors, preferably with ambient temperatures between 5°C and 30°C.
  • Open and close the valves every 3 months.
  • Ship and store valves so that no heavy loads are applied to the bodies.
Valve Location
  • Butterfly valves should be installed if possible a minimum of 6 pipe diameters from other line elements, i.e. elbows, pumps, valves, etc. Sometimes this is not feasible, but it is important to achieve as much distance as possible.
  • Where the Butterfly valve is connected to a check valve or pump, keep enough space between them to ensure the disc does not interfere with the adjacent equipment.
Valve Orientation

As a rule of thumb, Butterfly valves be installed with the stem in the vertical position with the actuator mounted vertically directly above it, however, there are some applications where the stem should be horizontal. Butterfly valve Seat Construction

Stoppage of flow is accomplished by the valve disk sealing against a seat that is on the inside diameter periphery of the valve body. Many Butterfly valves have an elastomeric seat against which the disk seals. Other Butterfly valves have a seal ring arrangement that uses a clamp-ring and backing-ring on a serrated edged rubber ring. This design prevents extrusion of the O-rings.

In early designs, a metal disk was used to seal against a metal seat. This arrangement did not provide a leak-tight closure, but did provide sufficient closure in some applications (i.e., water distribution lines).

Butterfly valve Body Construction

Butterfly valve body construction varies. The most economical is the wafer type that fits between two pipeline flanges. Another type, the lug wafer design, is held in place between two pipe flanges by bolts that join the two flanges and pass through holes in the valve's outer casing. Butterfly valves are available with conventional flanged ends for bolting to pipe flanges, and in a threaded end construction.

These valves are capable of bi-directional flow control, zero leakage, low fugitive emissions, steam-based applications (up to 550°C) and for cryogenic applications (down to -196°C).
Seat Disk and Stem of a Butterfly valve

The stem and disk for a Butterfly valve are separate pieces. The disk is bored to receive the stem. Two methods are used to secure the disk to the stem so that the disk rotates as the stem is turned. In the first method, the disk is bored through and secured to the stem with bolts or pins. The alternate method involves boring the disk as before, then shaping the upper stem bore to fit a squared or hex-shaped stem. This method allows the disk to "float" and seek its center in the seat. Uniform sealing is accomplished and external stem fasteners are eliminated. This method of assembly is advantageous in the case of covered disks and in corrosive applications.

In order for the disk to be held in the proper position, the stem must extend beyond the bottom of the disk and fit into a bushing in the bottom of the valve body. One or two similar bushings are along the upper portion of the stem as well. These bushings must be either resistant to the media being handled or sealed so that the corrosive media cannot come into contact with them.

Stem seals are accomplished either with packing in a conventional stuffing box or by means of O-ring seals. Some valve manufacturers, particularly those specializing in the handling of corrosive materials, place a stem seal on the inside of the valve so that no material being handled by the valve can come into contact with the valve stem. If a stuffing box or external O-ring is employed, the fluid passing through the valve will come into contact with the valve stem.

The butterfly valve has been in use since the late 18th century. James Watt used a butterfly valve in his steam engine prototypes. With advances in material manufacturing and technology, butterfly valves could be made smaller and withstand more-extreme temperatures. After World War II, synthetic rubbers were used in the sealer members, allowing the butterfly valve to be used in many more industries. In 1969 James E. Hemphill patented an improvement to the butterfly valve, reducing the hydrodynamic torque needed to change the output of the valve.

Principle of operation
Operation is similar to that of a ball valve, which allows for quick shut off. Butterfly valves are generally favored because they cost less than other valve designs, and are lighter weight so they need less support. The disc is positioned in the center of the pipe. A rod passes through the disc to an actuator on the outside of the valve. Rotating the actuator turns the disc either parallel or perpendicular to the flow. Unlike a ball valve, the disc is always present within the flow, so it induces a pressure drop, even when open.

A butterfly valve is from a family of valves called quarter-turn valves. In operation, the valve is fully open or closed when the disc is rotated a quarter turn. The "butterfly" is a metal disc mounted on a solid stem. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned so that it completely blocks off the passageway. When the valve is fully open, the disc is rotated a quarter turn so that it allows an almost unrestricted passage of the fluid. The valve may also be opened incrementally to throttle flow.

There are different kinds of butterfly valves, each adapted for different pressures and different usage. The zero-offset butterfly valve, which uses the flexibility of rubber, has the lowest pressure rating. The high-performance double offset butterfly valve, used in slightly higher-pressure systems, is offset from the centre line of the disc seat and body seal (offset one), and the centre line of the bore (offset two). This creates a cam action during operation to lift the seat out of the seal resulting in less friction than is created in the zero offset design and decreases its tendency to wear. The valve best suited for high-pressure systems is the triple offset butterfly valve. In this valve the disc seat contact axis is offset, which acts to virtually eliminate sliding contact between disc and seat. In the case of triple offset valves the seat is made of metal so that it can be machined such as to achieve a bubble tight shut-off when in contact with the disc.

Types
Concentric butterfly valves – this type of valve has a resilient rubber seat with a metal disc.

Doubly-eccentric butterfly valves (high-performance butterfly valves or double-offset butterfly valves) – different type of materials is used for seat and disc.

Triply-eccentric butterfly valves (triple-offset butterfly valves) – the seats are either laminated or solid metal seat design.

Wafer-style butterfly valve
The wafer style butterfly valve is designed to maintain a seal against bi-directional pressure differential to prevent any backflow in systems designed for unidirectional flow. It accomplishes this with a tightly fitting seal; i.e., gasket, o-ring, precision machined, and a flat valve face on the upstream and downstream sides of the valve.

Lug-style butterfly valve
Lug-style valves have threaded inserts at both sides of the valve body. This allows them to be installed into a system using two sets of bolts and no nuts. The valve is installed between two flanges using a separate set of bolts for each flange. This setup permits either side of the piping system to be disconnected without disturbing the other side.

Types of Butterfly valves

Butterfly valves has a short circular body, a round disc, metal-to-metal or soft seats, top and bottom shaft bearings, and a stuffing box. The construction of a Butterfly valve body varies. A commonly used design is the wafer type that fits between two flanges. Another type, the lug wafer design, is held in place between two flanges by bolts that join the two flanges and pass through holes in the valve's outer casing. Butterfly valves are even available with flanged, threaded and butt welding ends, but they are not often applied.

Butterfly valves possess many advantages over gate, globe, plug, and ball valves, especially for large valve applications. Savings in weight, space, and cost are the most obvious advantages. The maintenance costs are usually low because there are a minimal number of moving parts and there are no pockets to trap fluids.

Butterfly valves are especially well-suited for the handling of large flows of liquids or gases atrelatively low pressures and for the handling of slurries or liquids with large amounts ofsuspended solids.

Butterfly valves are built on the principle of a pipe damper. The flow control element is a disk of approximately the same diameter as the inside diameter of the adjoining pipe, which rotates on either a vertical or horizontal axis. When the disk lies parallel to the piping run, the valve is fully opened. When the disk approaches the perpendicular position, the valve is shut. Intermediate positions, for throttling purposes, can be secured in place by handle-locking devices.

  • Body Seat 360° uninterrupted body seat with no shaft penetration insures leak free performance. Type 316 Stainless Steel provides long life and corrosion free mating surface for resilient seat.
  • Ductile Iron provides strength and rigidity to withstand dynamic forces from flow and pressure transients. The added strength allows the disc design to have a smaller cross section providing improved headloss characteristic.
  • Rubber Seat Special formulated elastomers for chemical resistance and long cycle life. The 360° resilient seat is uninterrupted for positive seating.
  • Shaft Stainless Steel shafts meet AWWA C504 diameter requirements. Through-shafts provided standard on sizes 3”- 24” and available on 30” and larger when specified.
  • Tangential Taper Pins: Stainless Steel Taper Pins with lock nut and O-ring seal utilize tangential forces of the taper pin and lock nut to provide the most secure method available of locking the disc to the shaft.
  • Retention System proven dependability Seating System is easily adjusted and field replaceable. All seat hardware is Type 316 Stainless Steel.
  • The traveling nut design provides characterized closure during the last half of travel. Exclusive externally adjustable stops are rated to 450 ftlbs of input torque. Standard FA10 motor mounting flange provides ease of automation.
  • Shaft Seal is a self-adjusting/wear compensating V-Type packing. Packing is easily replaced without removal of the valve from the line.
  • Sleeve Bearings Low friction bearings are self-lubricating and non-corrosive, for a long, trouble-free life.
  • Thrust Bearing Factory-set bronze thrust bearing assures proper centering of valve disc. Thrust bearings are field adjustable in sizes 30” and larger.
